Online game rental is where it’s at these days. Driving to your local video store to look through a sorry collection of video games is so last century. Here’s a game we think you’ll enjoy renting - Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Check out our review of the Xbox 360 version.
Movie tie-ins in the video gaming world have typically been more miss than hit. The main reason for this is that these types of games are usually rushed out the door in order to coincide with the movie release date. However I’m happy to report that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen does not fall victim to this curse.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen features a single-player game as well as a multiplayer mode. The single-player game consists of two campaigns. You can play as either the Autobots or the Decepticons. Both campaigns are pretty similar with minor differences. I would have preferred to see more of a difference between them as it would have added some replay value to the single-player side of things. However the campaigns are fun enough to somewhat make up for this shortcoming.
Single-player gameplay is largely comprised by a series of short missions. The missions vary from racing around a level to meet an objective to destroying enemies and other things around you in the environment. Most of the missions take place on land though one particularly fun one takes place at sea and consists of you defending several aircraft carriers from an onslaught of Decepticons.
Controlling the Transformers is quite a bit of fun as you have a fair number of ways to destroy your rivals. Your methods of destruction consist of primary and secondary weapons, vehicle weapons, your special attack and an overdrive ability which is essentially a god-mode. Transforming from vehicle to robot mode and vice-versa enables you to do melee attacks and super jumps which adds to the fun.
Where Revenge of the Fallen really shines however is in the multiplayer mode. It’s set up as a team based approach similar to many military sims and Team Fortress 2. Your transformers take on various roles such as artillery, scouts, snipers and healers. The Revenge of the Fallen features a unique version of capture the flag called Battle for the Shards. Being able to play capture the flag with fully-armed robots really turned out to be a blast!
I give Revenge of the Fallen game an 8 out of 10, mainly on the strength of the multiplayer experience. The single-player is good fun but the various multiplayer objective based games are really what make Revenge of the Fallen a real treat. Rent it today and I think you’ll agree!
